The Patient Care Technician (PCT) works as part of a dialysis health care team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. The role includes setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, assisting with patient care and education, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities. No prior dialysis experience is required; the organization provides 12 weeks of paid, structured training with an assigned preceptor and nurse educator. The PCT welcomes patients, monitors their condition and response to treatment, assesses vascular access, performs cannulation and other delegated tasks as permitted, initiates and discontinues dialysis treatments, documents treatment information, and reports changes or unusual findings to a registered nurse or supervisor. The role also involves specimen collection and handling, infection-control practices, equipment cleaning, and maintaining treatment supplies. In a Transitional Care Unit, the PCT helps coordinate care for newly admitted patients during their first four weeks of dialysis, reinforces education, helps patients understand home dialysis and treatment options, supports transitions to a chosen modality, and assists with supply ordering and inventory. The position requires travel between assigned facilities and community locations and may involve travel to regional, Business Unit, and Corporate meetings. Work takes place in a healthcare facility and may involve exposure to infectious materials, heavy lifting and moving patients, prolonged standing, and bending.
