About The Position

A Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides basic health care and support to patients under the guidance of a Registered Nurse or designated healthcare professional. The role includes sanitizing and cleaning patient rooms, monitoring patients’ health and vital signs, and assisting with basic needs such as feeding and grooming. The position is in the Physical Therapy – Mercy St. Charles – Rehab Care Acute department at St. Charles Hospital, with 24 scheduled weekly hours on the day shift.

Requirements

• Complete one of the following: a nursing aide training program; STNA state testing (required if OH LTC); CNA certification; nurses aide state testing; a nursing program including one clinical nursing course and one clinical rotation; or one year of relevant clinical-setting experience.
• Obtain BLS Basic Life Support certification from an approved source before providing direct patient care.
• Demonstrate problem-solving skills and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Engage with staff and patients professionally.
• Be proactive in a rapidly changing environment.

Nice To Haves

• BLS Basic Life Support certification upon hire.
• Recent experience in acute care, a physician’s office, home health or hospice, or a long-term care facility; experience in the setting of application is preferred.
• EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training.

Responsibilities

• Provide basic patient care, including comfort, vital-sign measurement, personal care and hygiene, mobility assistance, and unit-based specialty duties.
• Communicate patient changes or concerns to the nurse, acting as a liaison between the patient and nurse.
• Provide customer service to patients, patients’ families, visitors, and employees.
• Document patient care accurately, precisely, and promptly when applicable.
• Participate in hand-offs and report pertinent patient and departmental information upon arrival and departure.
• Perform delegated tasks after competency has been validated.
• Mobilize patients using therapeutic transfer techniques that promote independence and safety.
• Encourage patients to complete tasks as independently as possible.
• Individualize care based on patients’ interests and hobbies.
• Sanitize and clean patients’ rooms; monitor patients’ health and vital signs; assist with basic needs such as feeding and grooming.
