About The Position

UPMC Hamot is seeking a Full Time PCT to join the TNICU team! This role involves direct patient care, unit support, documentation, and teamwork within a hospital setting. The PCT will work under the direction of an RN and is responsible for various patient care activities, maintaining a safe environment, and adhering to hospital policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1 Year of general healthcare experience, OR
  • 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion for those with less than 1 year of experience OR
  • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR
  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class S
  • Successful completion of eRecord training.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34

Nice To Haves

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program
  • ACLS preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care under the direction of the RN, including activities of daily living (ADLs): bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning, and transporting patients.
  • Perform point‑of‑care testing and nursing assistant core responsibilities, including blood glucose monitoring, vital signs, weights, intake & output, telemetry application/reapplication, Foley care, urine specimen collection, and restraint application/removal per policy.
  • Support Hospital‑Acquired Condition (HAC) and patient safety indicator prevention.
  • Assist with intra‑hospital transportation (“Ticket to Ride”).
  • Provide one‑to‑one patient companionship and supervision as required.
  • Offer diversional activities to reduce or prevent restraint use.
  • Respond to emergent situations within the scope of the Nursing Assistant role.
  • Communicate changes in patient condition promptly to the RN.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized patient care environment, including safety checks, linen changes, equipment cleaning, and hallway clearance.
  • Stock patient rooms and unit supply areas; acquire, distribute, and set up equipment within scope.
  • Deliver patient nourishments, fill water pitchers, distribute patient mail, pass meal trays, and respond to call lights and telephones.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department.
  • Document care accurately in the medical record per established procedures.
  • Complete clerical and messenger duties as needed.
  • Access to medications is limited to delivery to the nurse only.
  • Demonstrate clear, respectful, and effective communication with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Establish professional interpersonal relationships and contribute positively to unit operations.
  • Demonstrate accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues.
  • Identify learning needs, seek feedback, and take initiative to improve performance.
  • Request assistance with planning and prioritization as needed.
  • Participate in unit improvement efforts and universal unit activities.
  • Adhere strictly to all UPMC policies regarding patient care, safety, confidentiality, and hospital information.
  • Follow standard precautions and bloodborne pathogen exposure procedures.
  • Support a culture of safety for both patients and staff.
  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, workplace safety, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions.
