About The Position

Geisinger is offering a Patient Care Technician position with a $1500 sign-on bonus, a minimum hiring rate of $18.94 (with increased rates for experienced individuals), and up to $3 shift differentials for evening, nights, and weekend shifts. There's also financial support of up to $40,000 to become a nurse. This opportunity is on the newly renovated, state-of-the-art adult Advanced Acute Care Medical (BP2) unit, a 20-bed unit with private rooms and the latest technology. The unit is designed to deliver compassionate, culturally sensitive, and clinically excellent care to a diverse adult patient population. The role is supported by a visible and engaged leadership team including an Operations Manager, Clinical Team Coordinator, and Nurse Educator. The BP2 unit operates within the ACE Nursing Model of Care (Achieving Collaborative Excellence), which utilizes more Patient Care Technician staff to perform duties not requiring a nursing license, offering opportunities for career advancement, autonomy, and greater involvement in patient care delivery. The position involves performing a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, maintaining the patient care and unit environment consistent with policies, procedures, and practices, and meeting qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on the assigned clinical area.

Responsibilities

  • Being the primary facilitator of ADLs: hygiene, toileting, mobility, meals
  • Collecting vital signs & daily weights
  • Conducting Point of Care testing
  • Turning & repositioning patients
  • Performing equipment checks & exchanges
  • Dressing care
  • Removal of Foley Catheter and Peripheral IV
  • Nasogastric tube removal and performing nasal swabs
  • Checking code carts and oxygen storage cabinets
  • Performing a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse
  • Maintaining the patient care and unit environment consistent with the policies, procedures, and practices
  • Meeting the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinical area
  • Providing enhanced patient care under the direction of the licensed nurse, which may include but is not limited to advanced dressing care, suctioning, removal of Foley Catheter and peripheral IV
  • Performing venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines
  • Performing daily, hands-on aspects of the storage, preparation and delivery of breast milk, infant and pediatric formulas
  • Documenting in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record
  • Identifying, observing, and documenting the physical needs of the patient according to established standards
  • Reporting any changes in patient condition to licensed personnel in a timely manner
  • Obtaining and maintaining the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy and procedure, according to physician order
  • Providing for or assisting patients with activities of daily living and fulfills designated and delegated responsibilities for ongoing continuum of care, including patient hygiene and changing linens
  • Providing one to one patient safety watch as assigned following established policies and procedures
  • Accurately processing specimens and providing timely transport of the specimen to the laboratory
  • Performing point of care patient testing and point of care instrument maintenance and quality control
  • Assisting in problem solving, trouble shooting and taking corrective measures in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies
  • Serving as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students in a positive manner
  • Performing clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths according to standards and facilitates patient throughput activities
  • Transcribing and processing orders according to unit standard
  • Releasing and confirming ordered tests to appropriate departments
  • Coordinating transportation of patients to multiple tests
  • Participating in obtaining and communicating electronic information as pertinent to the nursing unit
  • Assisting in ordering supplies (stationery items as well as floor stock, patient needs, individual nursing supplies)
  • Communicating with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets
  • Operating, problem solving, and taking corrective measures for clerical equipment (including scheduling maintenance of computers, fax machines, phones, etc.)
  • Transporting non-controlled medications as necessary to meet the needs of the clinic or unit
  • Assisting with transporting non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed
  • Assisting with transporting blood products to and from Blood Bank as needed
  • Performing discharge follow up phone calls / coordinating virtual discharge appointment team
  • Supporting / Assisting staff with 5 min Drills and/or Quality Rounds - participate in regulatory readiness as needed
