The Patient Care Technician provides direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and the plan of care under the direction of the RN or licensed independent practitioner. This role involves providing safe and direct care to patients in their assigned unit, monitoring their conditions, and updating the healthcare team. The technician will provide direct and indirect care to patients with and without medical/surgical complications, ensuring their comfort, personal hygiene, and safety needs are met. Care must be provided in accordance with nursing and medical plans of care and VCUHS Nursing and Hospital policy and procedure. The technician is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and stocked clinical environment, managing supplies, and contributing to a positive patient experience by identifying patients, observing safety goals, and reporting any patient responses or incidents to the appropriate personnel. Duties also include obtaining and recording patient information, such as vital signs and intake/output, and assisting with specimen collection. Attendance at mandatory in-services and trainings is required, along with adherence to online training requirements and patient safety initiatives. Establishing and maintaining courteous and effective rapport with patients, visitors, co-workers, and the healthcare team is essential, demonstrating sensitivity and responsiveness to their needs.
