Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of patient care experience OR Enrollment in a PT, OT, PA, or related healthcare program with at least one completed clinical rotation OR Bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field OR Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician training
  • Completion of basic information systems training
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Medication access limited to distribution to licensed nursing staff
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification (AHA-compliant with skills demonstration) required within 30 days of hire
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care under RN direction, including assisting with ADLs, procedures, and therapies
  • Perform core PCT responsibilities, including vital signs, point-of-care testing, telemetry application, specimen collection, bladder scans, EKGs, and basic dressings
  • Assist with unit and patient needs (e.g., responding to call lights, meal delivery, patient transport, and monitoring)
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment while following infection control and safety protocols
  • Monitor patients and report changes in condition or equipment issues promptly
  • Document care accurately and complete clerical tasks as needed
  • Support unit operations by stocking supplies and assisting with department activities
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team to support coordinated care
  • Demonstrate professionalism by building positive relationships, supporting team initiatives, and seeking opportunities for growth and development
  • Respond to emergent situations and provide patient supervision or assistance as appropriate
