The Patient Care Technician-Youth Apprentice (PCT-YA) position is a partnership with high schools, allowing students to perform regular schoolwork while obtaining classroom and hands-on training in the healthcare field. Under the supervision of an LPN, RN, or nurse leader, the PCT-YA performs patient-centered, evidence-based nursing care activities to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of patients. This role involves collaborative practice with the care team to achieve high-quality patient outcomes and contributes to departmental goals through compassionate, safe care and a commitment to continuous professional development.

Requirements

  • Must be a high school junior or senior student and be at least 16 years of age
  • Must have approval from school to enter the youth apprenticeship program
  • American Heart Association HealthCare Provider Life Support (BLS)

Responsibilities

  • Performs delegated patient care activities using evidence-based practice and specific competencies for the patient population served.
  • Checks patients’ vital signs, height, and weight, as needed, based on patient type.
  • Provides compassionate care and listens to patients’ concerns and guides them by answering any questions or concerns.
  • Identifies and escalates changes in patient status or patient risks to prevent crisis.
  • Collects clinical data and information on patients and reports to care team.
  • Repositions, transfers, ambulates and transports patients.
  • Assists patients with basic needs (such as hygiene, eating, using the restroom, and dressing).
  • Obtains and reports patient intake and output.
  • Provides care that is age appropriate, culturally specific, and developmentally appropriate in an environment that promotes patient safety.
  • Demonstrates professional and therapeutic relationships with patients, families, team members, and providers
  • Works with assigned leader to fulfill program requirements and documents learning outcomes
