About The Position

Participating in a Certified Nursing Assistant program approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON), this is a training role working under the direction of professional nursing staff to provide direct patient care. Practices clinical skills to gain experience in acute care/hospital setting under the supervision of a licensed nurse.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be participating in Certified Nursing Assistant program approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON).
  • Understands the patient care technician trainee role in relation to the healthcare workplace, especially in relation to the performance of delegated nursing functions.
  • Ability to read, write and understand medical terminology.
  • Follows directions and effectively conveys verbal and written information.
  • Performs mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Responds to emergency situations appropriately.
  • Adapts hours of availability to variable and changing needs of the hospital, including all shifts.
  • Effectively functions as a member of a collaborative team.
  • Organizes and manages time effectively, setting appropriate priorities.
  • Complies with OSHA standards.
  • Understands and respects importance of patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Develops and promotes a constructive/positive atmosphere within the work area by demonstrating the ability to maintain cooperation with and assist fellow health team members, physicians, intra and inter-departments, hospital and nursing administration.
  • Applies interpersonal relationship skills in the healthcare workplace.
  • Understands the ethical and legal issues affecting the work of the patient care technician trainee.
  • Understands common mental health problems.
  • Understands the features of acute and long-term care.
  • Understands ways to improve patient satisfaction/experience.
  • Understands general concepts of hospital reimbursement.
  • Demonstrates a basic understanding of disease process and chronic vs. acute illness.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides individualized care to meet the needs of the patient.
  • Performs and/or assist the patient with personal grooming and hygiene, including CHG bath or soap/water complete bath.
  • Performs and/or assists patients with eating and drinking and educates patients on the importance of food and basic nutrition and nutrition’s role in health and illness.
  • Identifies and applies basic observational recording and reporting skills
  • Obtains intake and output data for a variety of patients and records/reports results.
  • Utilizes and documents patient care in the electronic health system.
  • Uses proper infection control techniques.
  • Positions the patient with ambulation. Performs range of motion exercises.
  • Understands activities of daily living (ADLs). Assist patients with toileting.
  • Performs selected treatments including mental health on a variety of patients as directed and/or supervised.
  • Prepares patients for surgery and cares for them afterwards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
