Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent Required.
  • Graduate of Certified Nursing Attendant Program.
  • Certified as a CNA.
  • At least 6 months relevant experience.
  • BLS or Heartsaver CPR/AED certification (Issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) is required upon entry to the position.
  • Working knowledge of English is evident in verbal, reading and writing abilities.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with Admission/Transfer/Discharge of patients, including orienting patients, providing toileting supplies, assisting with clothing and property, preparing bedside units, and escorting patients upon discharge.
  • Conducts patient rounds for toileting, positioning, comfort, safety, and personal needs, and responds promptly to patient call lights.
  • Assembles O2 and suction set-ups.
  • Provides basic hygiene to patients, including bathing, AM/PM care, mouth care, denture care, hair care, nail and foot care, shaving, and assisting with bedpans, urinals, and commodes.
  • Prepares patients for meals, including positioning, assisting with utensils and food items, and feeding patients.
  • Performs and/or assists patients with simple treatments, removes and reapplies SCD wraps, and assists RNs in enema procedures.
  • Collects specimens as directed by RN.
  • Informs RN of any audible clinical alarms (e.g., IV pumps, feeding pumps, ventilators, bedside monitors).
  • Assists with moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients.
  • Assists with the removal and security of patient personal items prior to procedures.
  • Changes linen in accordance with policy and as necessary.
  • Takes and electronically records vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, pulse oximetry, respiration) and reports abnormalities to RN.
  • Weighs patients and electronically records weight on admission and as directed by RN.
  • Measures and records oral intake, urinary output, bowel elimination, and drainage, calculates 8-hour totals, and empties drainage bags.
  • Performs post-mortem care.
  • Performs safety observations for patients on continuous observation or in restraints.
  • Reports any observed changes in patient condition to the RN.
  • Responds to and meets patient/family needs and concerns with compassion and understanding, establishing effective relationships with staff, patients, and families.
  • Maintains competence through in-service and educational programs.
  • Attends staff meetings and reviews minutes of meetings not attended.
  • Maintains a safe and uncluttered environment of care in patient rooms, assists with supply and equipment management, and maintains cleanliness of utility rooms and pantries.
  • Performs other duties such as errands, relieving other units, bringing stretchers, and assisting other team members.
  • Discusses personal or unit-based educational goals/plans with the Nurse Manager and/or Nursing Professional Development Specialist.
  • Demonstrates accountability for supplies, equipment, and environmental support.
  • Assists in the collection of data for the unit's Quality and Performance Improvement Program.
  • Provides instruction and demonstrates desired skills to NAs before they undertake new tasks.
  • Shares feedback with new and current NAs regarding areas for development.
  • Performs other duties aligned with the mission and values of the organization.
