About The Position

The Patient Care Technician will assist patients with personal care needs, vital signs, and basic procedures under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). This role involves documenting patient care in the electronic medical record, assisting with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, and answering unit phones. The technician may also perform duties of an Observation Assistant as needed. This is a part-time position requiring 24 hours per week, with night shifts from 7:00 pm to 7:30 am, including every other weekend. A mandatory orientation will take place the week of starting, Monday through Thursday, from approximately 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Requirements

  • Completion of the level of knowledge normally obtained through the completion of high school.
  • Completion of an accredited CNA course and the successful completion of the CNA certification exam, EMT or paramedics training course, or current enrollment in an accredited nursing program with the completion of at least one major clinical medical or surgical rotation.
  • Current CPR certification from the American Heart Association.

Responsibilities

  • Assists patients with personal care needs including bathing, grooming, oral care, eating, use of bedpan or urinal, positioning, answering and responding to patient call lights, and bed making, under the supervision of a RN/LPN.
  • Assists with exercising and ambulating patients, utilizing correct body mechanics while assisting with patient mobility, and maintaining the physical safety and comfort of patients under the supervision of a RN/LPN.
  • Obtains patient vital signs, input and output checks, and accu-checks, and reports abnormalities to the nurse.
  • Performs procedures such as EKGs, perineal care, emptying of foley bags, application of restraints, and backrubs as directed by RN/LPN.
  • Collects specimens such as urine, feces, and sputum, and delivers them as necessary.
  • Documents basic patient care into the electronic medical record.
  • Assists nursing and clerical staff with admitting, discharging, transferring, ambulating, transporting, and observing patients to ensure safety as directed.
  • Answers unit phones and effectively directs phone calls to the appropriate parties.
  • May perform duties of an Observation Assistant as needed.
