About The Position

The Patient Care Technician provides direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and plan of care under the direction of area leadership, RN or licensed independent practitioner. This role involves monitoring patients' conditions, providing updates to the health care team, and delivering direct and indirect care to meet patients' comfort, personal hygiene, and safety needs. Care is provided in accordance with nursing and medical plans of care and UVA Health Nursing and Hospital policy and procedure. The technician is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and stocked clinical environment, ensuring supplies and educational materials are available, and contributing to quality patient care outcomes. Additionally, the role involves identifying patients accurately, observing safety goals, reporting any safety concerns, and identifying and reporting physical and mental responses that pose harm to the Registered Nurse. The technician will obtain and record patient information, assist in specimen collection, attend mandatory in-services and training, and participate in patient safety initiatives. Demonstrating ASPIRE Values, teamwork, and recognizing time-sensitive issues are also key aspects of this position.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • No experience required
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS Certification required.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia OR
  • Emergency Medical Technician in the Commonwealth of Virginia OR
  • Military Corpsmen/Medic (Combat Medic Specialist /Tactical Combat Casualty Care /Tactical Paramedic) NREMT certification or Tactical Responder Certification OR
  • LPN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia OR
  • Graduate of a certified nursing program OR
  • Currently enrolled student nurses who have successfully completed the Clinical Experience and Didactic

Nice To Haves

  • Patient Care Technician Certification, preferred National Center of Competency Testing
  • For Non-Certified team members hired prior to May 11, 2026, certification is not required, as relevant experience will be accepted in its place.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safe and direct care to patients in their assigned work location making appropriate age adjustments as needed.
  • Monitor patients’ conditions and provide updates to the health care team.
  • Provide direct and indirect care to patients with and without medical/surgical complications to meet their comfort, personal hygiene and safety needs.
  • Provide care in accordance with nursing and medical plans of care and deliver per UVA Health Nursing and Hospital policy and procedure.
  • Ensure assigned clinical location is maintained as a safe, clean, stocked environment to facilitate meeting patient needs.
  • Maintain supplies, educational material, equipment, sterilization of supplies, instruments and the environment to promote quality, safe patient care outcomes (as applicable).
  • Contribute to the patient experience by accurately identifying the patient, by observing safety goals and reporting to a licensed independent practitioner, manager and/or Registered Nurses.
  • Identifying and reporting physical and mental responses posing harm to the Registered Nurse.
  • Obtain and record initial and ongoing patient information throughout the plan of care, including admissions as outlined by UVA Health policy.
  • Obtain or assist in the collection of specimens for diagnostic or waived tests.
  • Attend all mandatory in-services and training.
  • Ensure patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
  • Demonstrate ASPIRE Values in all human interactions.

  • Recognizes the importance of time sensitive issues.
