Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines and assisting in maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Supports the organization's commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI Activities, including patient satisfaction and process improvement. This role involves patient-related education, including assisting with patient-specific education on adequacy measures and disease processes. In terms of treatment, responsibilities include welcoming patients, evaluating vascular access, administering heparin, obtaining vital signs and weight, initiating and monitoring dialysis treatments, and discontinuing treatments according to established procedures. The technician will also be responsible for programming dialysis machines, ensuring safety alarms are enabled, documenting treatment information accurately, and reporting any significant changes in patient condition to the registered nurse or supervisor. Machine safety checks, cleaning, and disinfection are also key duties. The role includes preparing and organizing supplies to prevent wastage and monitoring patients performing self-care. Staff-related duties involve participating in the recruitment and clinical orientation/training of new staff, functioning as a preceptor in direct patient care training, and conducting competency evaluations for other PCTs. Collaboration with the Clinical Manager and Education Coordinator is expected for driving quality standards and educating staff on ESRD regulatory and legal requirements. The technician will also assist in training direct patient care staff and provide developmental support. Education and communication involve partnering with RN and IDT staff to educate personnel on facility water systems and environmental integrity. Ensuring strong communication between Clinical Managers, Education Coordinators, direct patient care staff, and support staff regarding training programs is crucial. The role includes participating in and potentially designing educational programs for PCT staff and monitoring processes through CQI activities. Maintenance and technical duties include maintaining environmental integrity and aesthetics, cleaning and disinfecting equipment, and preparing for dialysis treatments. Record keeping involves completing and documenting CQI activities, entering treatment data accurately, reviewing treatment sheets, preparing patient charts, and managing lab specimens. Infection control responsibilities include assisting with audits, acting as a change agent for infection control practices, reinforcing adherence to policies for new hires and ongoing staff/patient engagement, and participating in education response to surveys. The Transitional Care Unit (TCU) duties involve following newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis, coordinating transitional care, reinforcing education, liaising with FKC staff, assisting with understanding home dialysis options, performing treatments on TCU machines, demonstrating peritoneal dialysis setup, and coordinating transition to the patient's modality choice. Supply ordering and inventory for TCU are also included.
