About The Position

To assist licensed personnel in the delivery of quality patient care. The Patient Care Technician will provide a positive and professional representation of the organization, promote a culture of safety for patients and employees, and maintain hospital standards for a clean and quiet patient environment. They will maintain competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, adhere to infection-control policies, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations. The role also involves participating in ongoing quality improvement activities and maintaining compliance with organizational policies for handling confidential patient information. Demonstrates excellent customer service through attitude and actions, consistent with the organization's Vision, Mission, and Values. Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, local requirements, and TJC standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Certified Nurse Assistant preferred.
  • CPR/BLS certified.
  • One year experience in Nursing/Surgery preferred.
  • Ability to walk/stand for long periods of time.
  • Use correct body mechanism to position patients.
  • Assist patient’s movement to BSC, chair, and ambulating.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complete and accurate vital signs.
  • Consistently round on patients to anticipate needs.
  • Pass meal trays in a timely manner, providing wet cloth for patients use.
  • Ensure that all patients who are able, are sitting up and are comfortable for the meal.
  • Pick up meal trays in a timely manner.
  • Feed patients who are unable to feed themselves.
  • Provide ice water at least once every shift to bedside for patients who are able to have ice water.
  • Remove additional fluids from patients on fluid restrictions.
  • Offer/Provide bath, linen change to patients who require assistance or complete care, and document on activity record.
  • Notify licensed personnel if patient refuses bath and/or linen change, and document on activity record.
  • Obtain intake and output as directed by physician or plan of care.
  • Update patient board in room daily.
  • Assist in admission process by obtaining vital signs, providing personal care items and room orientation.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills in prioritization of care.
  • Identify changes in patient condition and notify licensed personnel of any change in patient condition.
  • Provide a safe environment.
  • Document all patient and family teaching as requested/necessary.
  • Demonstrate correct use and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Participate in the development, prioritization, and evaluation of individualized plan of care.
  • Assist in modification of plan based on patient's response.
  • Provide information directly to the physician and document appropriately.
  • Take directions from licensed and administrative professionals.
  • Attempt to resolve conflict independently, if unable, seek the assistance of department leader.
  • Provide healthcare at the best value without compromising patient care.
  • Utilize the Pyxis appropriately, obtain items under specific patient's name and return unused items.
  • Assist with chart completion and copying of all paperwork.
  • Coordinate with nursing supervisor and/or materials management for supply items that cannot be obtained from the Pyxis.
  • Ensure chart is documented and changes are added to the patient charge sheet.
  • Provide assistance to the physician during examination of patient.
  • Transport patient to procedures as needed.
  • Regularly attend monthly staff meetings.
