The Patient Care Technician provides direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and the plan of care under the direction of the RN or licensed independent practitioner. This role involves providing safe and direct care to patients in their assigned unit, monitoring their conditions, and providing updates to the healthcare team. The technician will also provide direct and indirect care to patients with and without medical/surgical complications to meet their comfort, personal hygiene, and safety needs, in accordance with nursing and medical plans of care and VCUHS policy and procedure. Ensuring the assigned clinical location is maintained as a safe, clean, and stocked environment is crucial. The role also includes maintaining supplies, educational materials, and equipment to promote quality, safe patient care outcomes. Contributing to the patient experience involves accurately identifying patients, observing safety goals, and reporting any changes in the patient's physical and mental responses or incidents posing harm to a licensed independent practitioner, manager, or Registered Nurses. The technician will obtain and record initial and ongoing patient information, including vital signs, intake and output, and other patient data as outlined by VCUHS policy. They will also obtain or assist in the collection of specimens for diagnostic or waived tests. Attendance at all mandatory in-services and trainings, and adherence to online training requirements are expected. Ensuring patient safety through job functions and participation in hospital, department, or unit patient safety initiatives is paramount. Establishing and maintaining courteous and effective rapport with patients, visitors, co-workers, and other members of the healthcare team, demonstrating sensitivity and responsiveness to their needs, is also a key function. The position serves a diverse patient population including Neonates, Infants, Pediatrics, Adolescents, Adults, and Geriatrics.
