Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of the first year of clinical work in a nursing program.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

Nice To Haves

  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, including bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulation, transportation, and other activities of daily living.
  • Monitor and report changes in patient condition to the RN and assist with responding to patient needs and emergent situations within the scope of the nursing assistant role.
  • Obtain and document routine patient information, such as vital signs, blood glucose readings, intake and output, and patient weights, according to established procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment by completing safety checks, cleaning equipment, changing linens, stocking supplies, and keeping patient care areas orderly.
  • Support patient comfort and wellbeing by delivering meals and nourishments, refilling water pitchers, distributing mail, and providing one-on-one supervision or companionship when needed.
  • Assist with the use of patient care equipment and supplies, including stocking, ordering, and distributing items necessary for patient care.
  • Apply, monitor, and remove restraints as directed by physician orders or hospital policy and provide diversion activities to help reduce restraint use.
  • Collaborate effectively with patients, families, nurses, and other team members while maintaining professional and respectful interpersonal relationships.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, confidentiality standards, infection prevention practices, and safety procedures.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the unit by responding to call lights and phones, assisting coworkers, transporting patients, participating in continuous learning, and supporting departmental improvements.
