The Patient Care Technician (PCT) II performs patient care activities, including but not limited to identifying and responding to abnormal findings, appropriately escalating changes in the patient’s condition to the nurse, and activities of daily living (ADL’s). The PCT II provides assistance with patient elimination, hygiene, comfort, safety, nutrition, progress activity and practices patient and family centered care. This role typically reports to the Unit Manager.

Requirements

  • Certified in Basic Life Support issued by (AHA) American Heart Association within 90 days of employment
  • Three (3) years of prior patient care experience (e.g. Certified Nursing Asssistant, or Emergency Medical Technician, or Patient Care Technician) or similar role required, preferably in an acute care setting.
  • Proficiency in all Core Competencies of the PCT position as noted in our Competency Based Tool.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities amongst peers.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care for assigned patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Directs patient care duties include but are not limited to vital signs, visual monitoring of a patient’s condition, hygiene support, toileting support, mobility support, nutrition support, bathing support, charting, and other activities of daily living as needed.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate documentation of information.
  • Appropriately report any unusual changes or findings to the nurse.
  • Assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment.
  • Obtains and prepare laboratory specimens as prescribed.
  • Serves in a mentor role and supports PCT staff through peer coaching.
  • Ensures training and orientation are completed for assigned PCT teams, and assists in the precepting of new employees as appropriate.
  • Participates in process improvement/quality improvement initiatives in collaboration with department leaders.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary rounds, meetings, and/or shared governance to contribute insights, share best practices, and address patient care issues collaboratively.
  • May support department leader with PCT specific operational tasks as assigned.
  • Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes; follows safety rules; works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors; and participates in organizational departments safety programs; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies and procedures.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
