About The Position

The Same Day Services Patient Care Technician is a caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for Same Day Services patients under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Same Day Services consists of the Preadmission Center and Same Day Surgery. The SDS-PCT provides care to the Same Day Services patient via coordinating reservations/scheduling, teaching, data collection and documentation, providing direct patient care assistance to the RN and MD, phlebotomy, and EKG. This is done in collaboration with other health care team members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience required.
  • CPR certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous nurses aid or clinical assistant experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interviewing patient, collecting and documenting basic patient information/data, filling out necessary forms and records, and witnessing consents in a thorough, concise, timely manner.
  • Providing patient education as delineated (i.e. health care directives) and documenting.
  • Assisting the RN in providing direct patient care pre-admission, pre-procedure, and post-procedure as delegated. Observing patient and reporting any changes in patient condition immediately to the RN.
  • Performing tasks on the SDS-PCT Orientation and Skills Checklist adequately.
  • Calmly carrying out instructions in an emergency situation.
  • Demonstrating awareness of Patient Rights; treating patients/families with respect, dignity, and kindness.
  • Keeping all patient information confidential.
  • Consistently demonstrating the ability to adapt to change in workload/assignments.
  • Continually using time to maximize full potential and setting priorities.
  • Taking initiative to make improvements and resolve issues. Reporting any irregularities in routine that he/she feels need more evaluation and identification for problem solving to the Charge Nurse or Unit Director.
  • Seeking validation of knowledge base, skill level, and decision-making, as necessary, and seeking guidance in areas of question. Seeking assistance when performing an unfamiliar procedure. Belonging to professional organization(s) and obtaining certification in field as appropriate.
  • Participating in teaching others; serving as preceptor for newly hired SDS-PCT.
  • Participating in development and attainment of Same Day Services goals. Demonstrating awareness of need for self-growth by assessing strengths and weaknesses and establishing written goals.
  • Following the attendance and punctuality policies of the Division of Nursing. Providing timely notification for absence or tardiness.
  • Assuming responsibility to attend mandatory inservices of the Arnot Health, Division of Nursing, and Unit.
  • Assuming responsibility for information shared in staff meetings.
  • Dressing professionally and appropriately for the position; wearing name tag visibly.
  • Functioning with an awareness of risk management and safety issues and reporting appropriately.
  • Following Arnot Health and Division of Nursing policy and procedure regarding infection control.
  • Participating in QI activities.
  • Demonstrating ability to use common sense and appropriate problem-solving techniques in interaction with other caregivers.
  • Communicating constructive ideas and being open to change. Demonstrating effective communication methods and skills, addressing issues in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Developing effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients, and their significant others.
  • Remaining flexible in staffing to provide coverage for Same Day Services.
  • Cross-training and floating to Same Day Services Units as appropriate and necessary.
  • Being familiar with and demonstrating Quality in Action principles and participating in the process as appropriate.
  • Being responsible for attending all mandatory annual educational programs as required by the position.
  • Understanding and demonstrating the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to the customer's needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintain communication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the Arnot Health.
