About The Position

This position assists with the admission process by taking initial vital signs, measurements, and weights, orienting patients and families to the unit, hospital facilities, and services, and documenting on appropriate forms per unit standards. The Patient Care Tech delivers patient care promptly, accurately, and according to unit standards, policies, and procedures, as well as the patient’s plan of care. They contribute relevant and appropriate information to the RN, maintain confidentiality of patient-related issues, and support the Patient Bill of Rights. The role involves participating in meetings, reinforcing patient’s educational needs, documenting accordingly, and providing emotional support to patients and families. Additionally, the position assists physicians/providers and nurses with procedures, performs EKGs, monitors and records patient intake and output, and reports changes in patient status to the RN. The Patient Care Tech assists patients with routine activities of daily living, answers call lights promptly, and transports patients to various departments. They are also responsible for stocking and ordering supplies, cleaning equipment, and maintaining a clean patient area. The role includes providing and documenting patient treatments within the scope of practice, attending unit-related in-services and meetings, and participating in Performance Improvement initiatives. Collaboration with others to achieve unit and organizational goals, utilizing the proper chain of command, and performing additional related duties as assigned are also key aspects of this role. All activities are conducted in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and hospital policies and procedures, including Blood and Body Substance Precautions. The Patient Care Tech continuously supports the Mission and Values of Johnson Memorial Health.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant or equivalent on the job training specific to the area for a minimum of three months required.
  • Must maintain current BLS or CPR for Healthcare Providers certification.

Nice To Haves

  • EMT certification is highly preferred (for Emergency Department).
  • NPR certification is required within one year of hire (for Maternity Center).

Responsibilities

  • Assists with admission process by taking initial vital signs, measurements, and weights, orienting patient/family to unit, hospital facilities and services, and documenting on appropriate forms per unit standards.
  • Delivers patient care promptly, accurately, and according to unit standards, policies, and procedures, as well as patient’s plan of care.
  • Contributes relevant and appropriate information to the RN.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient related issues.
  • Supports the Patient Bill of Rights.
  • Participates in meetings and reinforces patient’s educational needs, documents accordingly.
  • Provides emotional support to patients and families, documents appropriately.
  • Assists physician/provider and/or nurse with procedures which may include but not limited to lumbar puncture, thoracentesis, central line insertion, application of dressings, urinary catheterization, etc. per unit standards and within scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of sterile technique.
  • Performs EKGs, as needed.
  • Monitors and accurately records patient intake and output.
  • Reports changes in patient’s status (e.g., changes in vital signs, level of consciousness, weight, mobility status, comfort level, feeding pattern or any unusual occurrences) to the RN in a timely manner.
  • Assists patient with routine activities of daily living: feeding, bathing, ambulating, and skin care according to policy and documents appropriately.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills appropriate to the age, type, and developmental level of the patients.
  • Answers call lights timely and intervenes appropriately.
  • Responds to patient and family requests promptly.
  • Transports patients to various departments for services and upon discharge/transfer.
  • Stocks and orders supplies for unit and/or patient.
  • Removes equipment and supplies not in use; cleans equipment and returns to appropriate storage location.
  • Keeps patient area clean and free of trash and clutter.
  • Keeps linen appropriately stored; empties linen hampers and trash, as needed.
  • Provides and documents patient treatments within scope of practice.
  • Attends and participates in unit related in-services, conferences, and meetings.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement initiatives to improve organization performance and achieve established goals.
  • Collaborates by working with others to achieve unit and organizational goals.
  • Utilizes proper chain of command for resolution of difficult issues.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.
  • Clearly communicates and continuously supports the Mission and Values of Johnson Memorial Health.
  • Conducts all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and hospital policies and procedures including Blood and Body Substance Precautions.
