The Patient Care Technician functions as a clinical support partner, assisting the patient care team by performing various tasks and procedures as instructed by a licensed professional. Additionally, the Patient Care Technician may assume the responsibilities of a Health Unit Coordinator. This role is within the Acute Cardiovascular Unit - Level 3, a specialized Cardiovascular Telemetry department that cares for a variety of cardiothoracic patients. Patients may include those recovering from open heart surgeries, heart transplants, heart failure, CABG, valve replacement, lung surgeries, esophageal surgeries, vascular surgeries, myocardial infarction, post cardiac catheterization, and those with mechanical circulatory heart conditions. The unit also manages a wide range of cardiac IV medications. PCTs in this role develop skills in areas such as chest tubes, epidurals, temporary pacemakers, measuring central venous pressures, IV insertion, EKG interpretation, and managing mechanical circulatory heart devices. PCTs are cross-trained as Telemetry Monitoring Technicians and Health Unit Coordinators.
