About The Position

The University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking a Patient Care Specialist for the Division of Pediatric Dentistry at the School of Dentistry. This position plans, coordinates, and oversees a variety of professional and administrative activities related to the efficient day-to-day operation of a department to facilitate patient care. The Patient Care Specialist is responsible for processing patient records and provide problem solving to promote timeliness of care. Acts as a patient advocate, acquainting patients with policies and procedures relevant to their care and helping them navigate the system, as necessary. This position will provide excellent customer service to inquiries regarding information, treatment, and special needs for patients.

Requirements

  • Bachelors in a healthcare profession or related field of patient care.
  • Two (2) years of related experience in healthcare or health research setting.
  • Knowledge of position requirements.
  • Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws.
  • Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.
  • Ability to demonstrate, understand, apply, and adhere to the UMB Core Values of Respect and Integrity, Well-being and Sustainability, Equity and Justice, and Innovation and Discovery.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate communication between patients, family members, medical staff, administrative staff, and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Interview patients or their representatives to identify problems relating to care.
  • Maintain knowledge of community services and resources available to patients.
  • Refer patients to appropriate health care services or resources.
  • Investigate and direct patient inquiries or complaints to appropriate medical staff members and follow up to ensure satisfactory resolution.
  • Explain policies, procedures, or services to patients using medical or administrative knowledge.
  • Provide consultation or training to students, volunteers, or staff on topics such as guest relations, patients' rights, and medical issues. May provide assistance to students in the management of patient loads.
  • Collect and report data on topics such as patient encounters and inter-institutional problems, making recommendations for change when appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
