The Patient Care Companion is responsible for ensuring a secure and safe environment by maintaining a continued awareness of safety hazards and observation of the patient. This role involves never leaving the assigned patient unattended and ensuring continuous monitoring before leaving the room for breaks, end of shift, or to accompany the patient on transport. The companion follows established policies and procedures for various precautions (suicide, seizure, falls, elopement, restraining) and emergency plans. They provide general patient care duties as directed by the registered nurse, including assisting with personal care, ordered activities, toileting, and ensuring the provision and maintenance of special patient supplies and appliances. When assigned to general floor duty, they respond to call lights and communicate patient requests to the registered nurse. The role also involves meeting the nutritional needs of the patient by reviewing dietary orders, assisting with meals, and providing accurate intake/output information. They also assist in tray distribution and passing of waters/juices. Communication and documentation are key, including maintaining patient confidentiality, communicating positively with patients, families, and health professionals, and documenting patient information on the Treatment Flowsheet. The companion communicates patient needs and observed changes to the RN, provides verbal change of shift reports, and acts as a patient/family advocate. They demonstrate awareness of the patient’s plan of care and contribute to maintaining the integrity of patient care standards and efficient unit operations by responding to emergencies, maintaining technical skills, and practicing infection control policies.
