The Patient Care Assistant is responsible for providing nursing care to patients under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse. This role involves assisting with daily living activities such as bathing, changing, toileting, and dressing. The Patient Care Assistant will also perform light housekeeping in patient rooms and maintain cleanliness in utility rooms, linen and storage closets, and hallways. Clinical patient care duties that do not require a nursing license are also part of the role. Responsibilities include responding to call lights, managing phone operations, orienting patient families/visitors, and maintaining stocked patient care areas. Accurate electronic medical record keeping and documentation of all patient care interactions are essential. The Patient Care Assistant will review and discuss patient care plans and ongoing patient care activities with the assigned Registered Nurse. Efficient patient flow will be maintained by monitoring room availability and patient intakes/discharges. Patient rooms will be cleaned after discharge with assistance from nursing staff, and all items used during a patient stay will be disposed of properly. Reusable items must be processed for sterilization and reuse. Demonstrating knowledge and execution of correct patient safety practices is required. The role demands responsible, professional behavior in all aspects of the job, while working in a team setting.
