About The Position

Under the direction of departmental leadership, the Patient Access Technician provides administrative, clerical, and registration support to the patient care team. This role includes greeting and assisting patients, completing accurate registration, coordinating insurance and payment information, and serving as a key liaison between patients, families, and clinical teams.

  • Strong customer service/patient experience - they are dealing with kids so this is huge for CHKD.
  • Strong computer skills - they work in EPIC, Eclipses, PowerChart and FirstNet
  • Need to be comfortable dealing with the traumas that come in as well as all illnesses

Nice To Haves

  • EPIC experience would be helpful
  • Insurance Verification is helpful
  • Billing/Coding understanding is helpful

Responsibilities

  • Register patients arriving for inpatient surgeries, hospital admissions, and throughout all Emergency Department areas.
  • Enter accurate demographic and insurance information.
  • Verify active insurance policies and complete authorization data entry.
  • Collect copayments and obtain required patient signatures (including Treatment Patient Obligation forms).
  • Conduct initial ED check‑ins by collecting basic demographics and routing patients to triage.
  • Perform bedside registration for fast‑turnaround and high‑acuity patients, including full demographic completion.
  • Support billing inquiry functions and maintain accurate documentation in computerized systems.
  • Assist with mental health patient registration.
  • Provide compassionate service and remain composed during trauma, critical medical events, mental health crises, deaths, and infectious disease cases (e.g., COVID, monkeypox).
  • Assist in lab registration as part of cross‑training.
  • Support a high‑volume patient flow environment on the hospital’s first floor and in the ED.
