About The Position

Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking a customer-focused Patient Access / Registration Specialist to join our Patient Access team on a PRN basis. This position serves as a vital connection between patients and healthcare services by greeting patients, answering phones, registering encounters, verifying insurance eligibility, collecting payments, and ensuring accurate patient information is entered into the Electronic Health Record (EHR). The Patient Access Specialist plays a critical role in creating a positive first impression while supporting efficient patient flow and exceptional customer service. When assigned to the Emergency Department, the Patient Access Specialist works closely with the clinical team to support timely patient care and receives an additional $1.00/hour differential for hours worked in the ED.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum two (2) years of customer service experience preferred
  • Current AHA BLS (Heartsaver) certification required
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal communication and telephone etiquette
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and Teams
  • Ability to multitask and remain organized in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions while maintaining professionalism
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team

Nice To Haves

  • Prior healthcare experience preferred but not required
  • Electronic Health Record experience, particularly Cerner, preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and visitors in a professional, courteous, and timely manner
  • Answer incoming phone calls and direct inquiries appropriately
  • Accurately register patients within the Electronic Health Record
  • Collect and verify patient demographic information
  • Obtain and verify insurance information and eligibility
  • Ensure required registration forms and consents are completed and signed
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times
  • Collect patient co-payments and payments
  • Post payments accurately to appropriate accounts
  • Provide patients with information regarding financial assistance resources
  • Maintain accuracy in financial transactions and documentation
  • Scan and upload identification, insurance cards, and supporting documentation
  • Maintain accurate patient records and prevent duplicate medical records
  • Support registration functions for clinical and administrative staff
  • Utilize Cerner and other software applications effectively
  • Monitor incoming faxes and route appropriately
  • Assist patients with medical records requests and release forms
  • Complete opening and closing duties as assigned
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and departmental initiatives
  • Cross-train to support Patient Experience functions as needed
