About The Position

The Patient Access Specialist role is responsible for receiving and interviewing patients to collect and verify demographic and financial data. This position verifies insurance, initiates pre-authorization when required, and collects payments or makes financial arrangements. The specialist performs all duties in a courteous and professional manner and may also perform business office functions. Team members are expected to uphold Prisma Health's values: Inspire health. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent OR post-high school diploma/highest degree earned
  • Two (2) years of Admissions, Billing, Collections, Insurance and/or Customer Service experience
  • Basic computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, database, data entry)
  • Knowledge of office equipment (fax/copier)
  • Mathematical skills

  • Registration and scheduling experience
  • Familiarity with medical terminology

Responsibilities

  • Interview patients or other sources to gather demographic, financial, and employment information, ensuring compliance with HIPAA.
  • Accurately enter information into the computer database, access Sovera for current insurance cards, and scan documents.
  • Follow up on incomplete or missing information.
  • Verify insurance coverage and benefits using online eligibility tools or by phone, documenting all information obtained.
  • Assign appropriate insurance plans and ensure correct insurance priorities based on third-party requirements/COB.
  • Initiate the pre-certification process as required and obtain signed waivers when pre-certification is needed but not yet obtained.
  • Obtain necessary signatures and information on forms such as Consent Form, Liability Assignment, and Waiver Letter.
  • Receive payments, issue receipts, and work towards collection goals.
  • Maintain cash funds/verification logs and make daily deposits according to policy.
  • Prepare and distribute reports, documents, and patient identification items, including Privacy Notice, Patient Rights and Responsibilities, Medicare Booklet, schedules, productivity logs, collection reports, armbands, and valuables.
  • Communicate estimated financial responsibility to patients and request payment prior to or at the time of service.
  • Refer patients needing extended terms to the Medical Services Payment Program and those needing financial assistance to appropriate programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
