About The Position

Sheridan Community Hospital is seeking a Patient Access Specialist to join our front-line registration team. In this role, you are more than registration—you are the first interaction patients have with our hospital, ensuring a positive, welcoming experience while supporting efficient access to care. This role is critical to the patient experience and hospital operations. You will ensure accurate and timely patient registration, verify insurance to prevent billing delays, support smooth patient flow across departments, and deliver compassionate service from the very first interaction.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous customer service experience required
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Typing proficiency (minimum 50 WPM and high accuracy)
  • Detail-oriented, dependable, and adaptable
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, patient-facing environment

Nice To Haves

  • Healthcare or clinical experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology preferred
  • Ability to learn and navigate EHR systems

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients in person and by phone with professionalism and compassion
  • Answer multi-line phones and direct calls appropriately
  • Register patients accurately in the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits
  • Collect payments and explain financial responsibilities
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA regulations
  • Assist with registration for Emergency, Outpatient, Lab, Imaging, and other services
  • Distribute and process required forms and documentation
  • Provide directions and support to patients and visitors
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
