About The Position

The Patient Access Specialist will primarily serve as a Referral Coordinator for the Eastern Regional Center. This position plays a key role in ensuring seamless patient care by managing referral processes and supporting administrative functions. This position assists patients during onsite registration and arrival for scheduled and unscheduled visits while prioritizing referral coordination tasks. The role requires excellent customer service skills, strong organizational abilities, and the capacity to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of job-related experience
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted
  • Excellent Communication - Oral and Written

  • Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with patients

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with processing medical referrals
  • Experience working with Family Planning, Pre-natal, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and providing immunizations
  • Experience translating Spanish to English in a medical or healthcare

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage patient referrals, ensuring timely follow-up and compliance with provider and insurance requirements. Referral coordinating includes: internal and external specialty referrals for Prenatal, Family Planning, and Child health Clinic for Departure, Eastern, Northern, and Southern Regional Centers
  • Process Project Access and UNC Charity Care applications for uninsured patients needing specialty referrals for Departure, Eastern, Northern, and Southern Regional Centers
  • Monitor and track referrals using the dashboards and referral desktops for Departure, Eastern, Northern, and Southern Regional Centers
  • Respond to telephone inquiries from patients with professionalism and sensitivity, providing accurate information regarding referrals and appointments
  • Gather, verify and update patient demographic, insurance, and medical information
  • Collect patient liabilities when necessary and ensure adherence to regulatory guidelines
  • Assist patients with onsite registration, check-in/check-out processes, and scheduling follow-up care
  • Maintain accurate documentation of referral activities and communicate effectively with providers, patients, and insurance representatives
  • Support additional administrative duties as needed to facilitate smooth clinic operations.
