About The Position

The Patient Access Specialist is responsible for ensuring accurate patient registration, coordinating patient account information, and serving as a resource for patients regarding up-front collections. This role involves interviewing patients to gather demographic, clinical, billing, insurance, and financial information, while maintaining compliance with EMTALA and HIPAA regulations. The Specialist will also be trained to work in all areas of Patient Registration and Switchboard operations, and will be responsible for training other Patient Access Associates. Specific objectives include maintaining an annual appraisal score of 2.0 or greater, registering a target number of patients per shift (40 per 8-hour shift for patient registrations, or around 60 for non-patient registrations), and maintaining a weekly error rate of 3% or less.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent.
Three (3) or more years of customer service or related experience.
Ability to work well under pressure and remain calm while maintaining positive patient and physician relations.

Nice To Haves

Certified HealthCare Access Associate (CHAA) Certification or national recognized PFS Certification.
Three (3) or more years of experience in Patient Access Registration in an acute care hospital and/or physician office setting.

Responsibilities

Ensure all documents are properly signed and witnessed as required.
Maintain and apply knowledge of current registration requirements.
Advise and coordinate patient account information with other department staff, clinical staff, and/or UR/Case management.
Recognize accounts that should be referred to management for assistance.
Evaluate patient visits/registrations and make recommendations for corrections as needed.
Call insurance companies for precertifications and authorizations.
Serve as a patient resource in matters concerning up-front collections based upon covered benefits and in accordance with hospital policy.
Complete inventory and order specific supplies for the department and keep supplies in proper storage areas.
Maintain compliance with EMTALA and HIPAA rules and regulations.
Interview the patient/guarantor to obtain complete demographic, clinical, billing, insurance, and financial information.
Work all areas of Patient Registration and Switchboard daily operations.
Train other Patient Access Associates in all duties.
Perform other duties as assigned.
