Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of healthcare-related or customer service experience.
  • Typing skills with a minimum of 35 wpm.
  • Good communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and other commercial payers (HMO, PPO) preferred.
  • Associate or bachelor degree may be accepted in lieu of experience.
  • Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the coordination, prioritization, and completion of front-end patient registration activities from pre-registration through discharge.
  • Ensure patient insurance verification is accomplished and all requirements are met.
  • Accurately complete patient registrations according to departmental protocols, standards, policies, procedures, and compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Call patients to pre-register or confirm appointments.
  • Prioritize work for optimal reimbursement and to avoid financial risk to both patient and hospital.
  • Ensure all insurance requirements are met prior to or on the date of service and inform patients of their financial liability and collect liability due.
  • Identify patients who require early financial counseling intervention.
  • Ensure all uninsured patients are referred to a financial counselor as appropriate.
  • Assist patients, guarantors, and families with insurance questions professionally and escalate unaddressed insurance benefit concerns to the department Financial Counselor.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information, employee information, and other information covered by regulations or professional ethics.
  • Perform duties in support of the EHC Patient Access Mission Statement.
  • Handle high patient volumes and fast pace with demonstrated time management skills.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of insurance, registration, scheduling, referrals, authorizations, and account follow-up.
  • Maintain knowledge of multiple department system applications utilized by Patient Access.
  • Adhere to all state and federal regulations such as EMTALA, CMS, HIPAA, and JCAHO guidelines.
  • Effectively communicate identified issues and concerns in a constructive and professional manner.
  • Participate in generating ideas and solutions for improvements.
  • Respond in a timely and appropriate way to verbal and written requests.
  • Accurately search the database to establish if a patient is new or established.
  • Obtain required signatures for release of information in a timely manner, adhering to policy and procedures.
  • Complete registration by verifying information and insurance for established patients or entering information for new patients prior to discharge.
  • Reconfirm date of birth and legal spelling of the patient's name.
  • Obtain appropriate signature(s) and scan all appropriate documents (Admission/Registration Agreement, Notice of Privacy Practice, and Important Message from Medicare, etc.).
  • Scan patient ID and insurance cards.
  • Make every attempt to collect patient liability as appropriate and document the response if not collected.
  • Appropriately distribute registration paperwork according to departmental procedures.
  • Schedule procedures/follow-up appointments.
  • Communicate hospital's financial policies to all patients.
  • Maintain appropriate monthly assurance accuracy rate as determined by the department.
  • Maintain established departmental standards regarding productivity, quality, and collections.
