This is a PRN/As needed position for the Emergency Department, requiring at least 35 hours per month, including one weekend shift and one holiday per year to maintain PRN status. The role involves accurately collecting and analyzing demographic, insurance/financial, and clinical data for patient registration and admission. Key responsibilities include identifying and addressing communication barriers, verifying patient identity and medical record numbers, collecting accurate patient and guarantor information, interpreting physician orders, validating insurance eligibility, explaining and securing necessary signatures for treatment and financial responsibility, completing Medicare questionnaires, understanding insurance plan rules, generating and processing required documents, and maintaining an accurate patient database. The position also performs revenue cycle activities to prevent payment denials and increase cash collections, including initiating inquiries to insurance payers, obtaining authorizations and referrals, explaining benefits and payment options, negotiating self-pay balances, explaining the charity care process, screening physician orders for medical necessity, reviewing and resolving situations where future care differs from the original plan, requesting and accepting payments, and balancing cash drawers. General clerical and support duties are also included, such as responding to inquiries, tracking patients, assisting with reminder calls and faxes, monitoring work queues, obtaining and clarifying physician orders, assuming patient admission and bed control responsibilities, utilizing account notes, and potentially performing order entry. The role requires excellent customer service behaviors specific to point-of-service registration, including greeting patients by name, following AIDET principles, preserving patient privacy, and resolving patient concerns.
