Our Values Respect | Belonging | Accountability | Transparency Department ACS-CHS Grants Funded Job Summary Under minimal supervision, the Patient Access Specialist II performs advanced registration and access functions with increased independence, accountability, and proficiency across all outpatient clinic registration areas. This role independently manages higher-complexity registration, insurance, and financial situations; serves as a knowledgeable resource for peers; and provides on-the-job training and workflow support as needed. The Patient Access Specialist II assists with quality and process improvement activities, supports regulatory and revenue integrity requirements, and provides flexible coverage across clinics and service lines to support efficient clinic operations and timely patient access.

Requirements

  • 4-6 years Patient Access in a clinic or hospital setting Required
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, email, and telephone skills required.
  • Skilled analysis of information, critical thinking and problem solving with an emphasis on customer service.
  • Ability to work with a diverse team of stakeholders (attorneys, providers, patients, staff) explaining procedures and policies in a health care setting
  • Knowledge of insurance programs and registration requirements; ID, Insurance, Power of Attorneys, Proof of Address, Co-pays and the proper documentation of these.
  • Ensures confidentiality of patient information by creating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharing information learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance of the job responsibilities or to improve a patient's care.
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinic flow as it pertains to patient and operations.
  • Ability to treat all customers and co-workers with courtesy, dignity and respect; consistently displays courteous and respectful verbal and non-verbal communication with customers and co-workers as established by policies and procedures.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Working knowledge of REDCap or willingness to learn

  • Epic Credentialed Trainer Certification Preferred or CHAA or CHAM Certification through NAHAM
  • Epic Preferred or CRCR through HFMA Preferred
  • No corrective action in the past year for internal candidates Required

Responsibilities

  • Builds upon skills developed as a Patient Access Specialist I by independently managing complex registration and access scenarios in outpatient clinic settings, completing required documentation in a timely manner, and following EMTALA, privacy, and organizational policies to support billing integrity and consistent patient access practices.
  • Provides on-the-job training, mentoring, and workflow guidance to staff and new hires, supports competency validation and best practices, and serves as a go-to resource during peak volumes, off-hours, and high-acuity events.
  • Maintains high standards for quality, productivity, and compliance, ensuring all patient access activities align with organizational policies, payer requirements, and applicable regulatory standards, including FQHC and HRSA guidelines.
  • Serves as a subject-matter resource for PAS I staff during high-acuity events, off-hours, and peak volumes by providing real-time workflow guidance, reinforcing standard work and best practices across shifts and units, supporting onboarding and competency validation for new hires, and functioning as an acting lead when assigned.
  • Supports efficient clinic and department flow by proactively identifying access barriers, prioritizing work in fast-paced environments, and coordinating with clinical, scheduling, and revenue cycle partners to minimize delays in care.
