Pathology Technician

About The Position

The Pathology Technician provides assistance to pathologists, pathologist assistants, and residents with tasks that support the processing and analysis of surgical specimens, following approved procedures with occasional guidance. The technician serves as a technical resource to CLA I staff and may oversee part of their training. The role is part of Vanderbilt Health’s Gross Room. Responsibilities include accessioning patient specimens, performing biopsies and other assigned special procedures, maintaining specimens and laboratory resources, and assisting with autopsies and autopsy-suite upkeep. The position requires attention to approved laboratory and safety procedures and may include additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

Less than one year of relevant work experience.
Associate's degree.
Ability to perform diagnostic testing in practical applications.
Fundamental awareness of mentoring and coaching, including training or mentoring coworkers.
Ability to maintain equipment, products, or systems in practical applications of moderate difficulty and ensure sufficient parts inventory.
Fundamental awareness of quality assurance and quality management practices.

Responsibilities

Accession patient specimens in a timely manner according to standard procedures and clinical needs.
Perform biopsies and other special procedures assigned by pathologist assistants, following approved procedures.
Maintain specimens, equipment, supplies, records, and files.
Assist residents and pathologists with autopsies.
Clean and maintain autopsy suites daily in accordance with approved laboratory and safety procedures.
Serve as a technical resource to CLA I staff and potentially oversee a portion of their training.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
