About The Position

The Pathology Technician performs a combination of technical and workflow-support duties within Anatomic Pathology, including specimen accessioning, gross examination of biopsy specimens, frozen section preparation, and rapid on-site evaluation support. This role actively works to instill and maintain cost prevention and cost containment, supports hospital policy and assists in the implementation of hospital policy changes, and exercises prudent judgment in performance of technical skills and operation of the area. The technician receives, verifies, and accession specimens into the laboratory information systems, confirms patient identification and specimen labeling accuracy, and accurately accessions all specimens that are delivered to the department, including cytology specimens. They also resolve specimen discrepancies for samples received from various hospital areas, ensuring accurate identification and timely processing.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in a science-related field OR education equivalent that includes: 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
  • Proficient manual dexterity and the ability to safely lift and handle supplies.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Flexibility to work additional shifts as needed.
  • Ability to utilize different pathology instruments including maintenance and troubleshooting.
