About The Position

The Pathologist provides professional laboratory oversight, diagnostic consultation, accreditation support, and technical guidance for laboratory operations supporting the Ascension Island medical clinic under the V2X program. The incumbent supports laboratory compliance, quality assurance, laboratory accreditation requirements, and clinical laboratory operations in accordance with applicable U.S. Federal, Department of Defense (DoD), Air Force, CLIP, CAP, and COLA standards. The Pathologist supports laboratory services required to maintain operational medical capability for the Ascension Auxiliary Airfield (AAAF) mission and provides reach-back consultation and professional oversight to laboratory personnel operating within a remote and austere environment.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of an accredited residency program in Pathology.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in clinical pathology or laboratory medicine preferred.
  • Experience supporting clinical laboratory operations, accreditation, and regulatory compliance programs.
  • Experience supporting healthcare operations in remote, overseas, military, or austere environments preferred.
  • Prior experience supporting government healthcare contracts or operational medicine environments preferred.
  • Current unrestricted U.S. medical license.
  • Board Certification in Pathology by the American Board of Pathology or equivalent recognized certifying body preferred.
  • Must maintain all required continuing medical education (CME), certifications, and professional qualifications.
  • Must maintain all credentialing and privileging requirements for the duration of employment.
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory operations, pathology practices, and laboratory accreditation standards.
  • Familiarity with CLIP, CAP, COLA, AFI, and applicable DoD laboratory requirements.
  • Ability to support laboratory quality assurance, inspection readiness, and corrective action programs.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and technical consultation skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to provide remote consultation and operational support in austere environments.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Proficiency with laboratory documentation systems and healthcare administrative applications.
  • Ability to work in office, laboratory, and clinical operational environments.
  • Capability to support operations within remote or austere island conditions.
  • Ability to support emergency medical operations and contingency response activities as required.
  • Must meet all medical, security, credentialing, and deployment requirements per contract and V2X policy.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain required access credentials and base access authorization.
  • Valid passport and ability to travel internationally as required.
  • Ability to comply with all Ascension Island operational, environmental, and safety requirements.
  • Must maintain professional conduct and operational readiness standards required for overseas contingency operations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional oversight, consultation, and technical guidance for laboratory operations supporting the Ascension Island clinic and laboratory services.
  • Support laboratory operations in compliance with AFI 44-102, DoD Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program (CLIP) standards, and applicable accreditation requirements.
  • Assist with maintaining Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program (CLIP) certification and accreditation through the College of American Pathologists (CAP), Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA), or other approved accrediting agencies.
  • Provide reach-back pathology and laboratory consultation support to on-island laboratory personnel and medical providers as required.
  • Support implementation and oversight of laboratory quality assurance, proficiency testing, inspection readiness, and quality improvement activities.
  • Review laboratory procedures, policies, testing protocols, and operational practices to ensure compliance with current standards and best practices.
  • Assist with development, review, and updates of laboratory operating procedures and laboratory testing capabilities.
  • Support annual review and validation of the Ascension Laboratory Menu in coordination with V2X leadership and medical personnel.
  • Provide consultation and guidance regarding laboratory testing, specimen handling, quality control, and diagnostic interpretation.
  • Support laboratory self-inspections, corrective action plans, and compliance reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with laboratory technicians and clinic leadership to maintain operational laboratory readiness in support of routine and emergency medical operations.
  • Assist with maintaining laboratory support capability for emergencies, after-hours, and life or limb-saving testing requirements.
  • Support credentialing, licensing, and compliance requirements associated with laboratory operations and professional practice standards.
  • Maintain communication with medical leadership, laboratory personnel, and external medical agencies as required.
