About The Position

Works under general supervision with technologists and/or Pathology Supervisors, who are available to handle or advise on unusual situations, conducting clinical laboratory tests which are of moderate complexity and require some professional training. Work is differentiated from that of a Technologist in the areas of independent judgement, complexity of tests and responsibility. Requirements

  • BASIC KNOWLEDGE:Work requires a level of knowledge generally obtained through an Associates Degree in chemistry, biology or related area, or by equivalent practical experience in a laboratory environment.
  • The ability to operate equipment and instruments, to perform all procedures and tests within an assigned laboratory section and to interpret them for accuracy.
  • The physical and visual dexterity necessary to conduct and interpret tests.
  • The physical ability to stand and work at the laboratory benches.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
  • EXPERIENCEix to twelve months of on the job related experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and determines suitability of solutions and reagents, following standard laboratory formulas.
  • Sets up and reads routine blood and urine cultures in order to detect pathogenic bacteria and determine the susceptibility of organisms to various antibodies.
  • Performs routine clinical and microscopic tests on urine and stool and other specimens.
  • Sets up instruments by re-supplying reagents, calibrates (sets equipment to known values) equipment and runs specimens to be tested on a variety of automated equipment.
  • Draws patient blood samples following established procedures, and transports specimens to the laboratory for testing.
  • Notes and logs specimens received and maintains detailed records of all tests performed. Reports test results to those authorized to receive them.
  • Reviews test results and determines their accuracy and conformance with established quality control parameters.
  • Prepares specimens for testing procedures, cutting section, staining, smearing, etc. Labels and logs all specimens processed.
  • Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, workbenches, and so forth.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
