About The Position

A leading international law firm is seeking an experienced Patent Agent to join its growing Intellectual Property practice in Chicago, IL. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in patent preparation and prosecution, along with the ability to work across a broad range of electrical, computer, and software technologies. This position offers significant client interaction and the opportunity to work closely with an experienced team of patent attorneys and patent agents on sophisticated domestic and international patent matters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is required.
  • Minimum of five years of patent drafting and prosecution experience as a Patent Agent in a law firm or corporate intellectual property department.
  • Strong technical writing, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to clients and colleagues.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent judgment and a proactive, client-focused approach.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience handling software-related patent matters is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct invention harvesting meetings with inventors and engineering teams.
  • Advise clients regarding invention disclosures, patentability, portfolio strategy, and prosecution.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and identify patentable innovations.
  • Draft and prosecute U.S. patent applications.
  • Coordinate and manage foreign patent prosecution with international counsel.
  • Assist with patentability, freedom-to-operate, validity, and infringement analyses.
  • Provide strategic intellectual property counseling to clients.
  • Support patent litigation, licensing, due diligence, and other IP-related matters when needed.
  • Serve as a technical resource for attorneys and clients across the broader intellectual property practice.
