About The Position

Under the direction of the Planning Lead, the Passenger Facilities Technician conducts routine inspections, maintenance coordination, and field support activities related to DASH transit passenger facilities and amenities. This position helps ensure that bus stops, shelters, signage, and passenger amenities are safe, functional, clean, and well-maintained for DASH customers. This position coordinates with internal departments, City staff, contractors, and vendors to identify and resolve maintenance and operational issues at bus stops and transit facilities. The Passenger Facilities Technician also supports passenger facility improvement projects, field data collection, customer information activities, and other Planning and Technology department support functions as needed.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of fixed route transit operations or willingness to learn.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and troubleshoot various types of data.
  • Ability to gather, maintain, and interpret basic data.
  • Ability to use tools, such as wrenches, power drills, fence post driver/pounder, etc.
  • Excellent customer service and customer relations skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle numerous assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and positive attitude.
  • Ability to convey basic information to passengers or the public.
  • Interact professionally with the public, city staff, regional partners, contractors, and other external parties.

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Extended periods of time working in outdoor environment and traveling between local bus and transit facilities.
  • Ability to move comfortably throughout various bus stop facilities in DASH service area.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including rain or moderate hot/cold temperatures.
  • Must be able to navigate locally throughout the City of Alexandria.
  • Lift moderate loads at times such as bus stop poles, digital signs, and supplies (<100 lbs.).
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to drive standard vehicles like pick-up trucks and SUVs.
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required.
  • Experience with or strong interest in learning about public transportation.
  • Proven ability to use hand and power tools in a safe manner.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of six (6) to twelve (12) months of experience with basic administrative functions in a professional setting preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of bus stops, shelters, signage, and passenger amenities throughout the DASH service area.
  • Maintain and update the bus stop inventory database, including photos, signage information, and related records.
  • Identify and report safety hazards, maintenance issues, cleanliness concerns, and accessibility deficiencies at bus stops and transit centers.
  • Coordinate with City staff, contractors, and vendors to address maintenance and repair needs related to passenger facilities.
  • Repair or replace minor bus stop components such as signage, benches, and related passenger facility elements as assigned.
  • Remove graffiti, stickers, and other defacements from bus stop structures and passenger facilities.
  • Assist with installation, inspection, and maintenance coordination for shelters, signage, lighting, and real-time information displays.
  • Administer temporary signage for bus stop relocations, detours, and service disruptions, including installation and removal of signs.
  • Ensure bus stop and transit center signage is accurate, visible, legible, and properly positioned.
  • Update route maps, schedules, and customer information materials at bus stops and transit centers as assigned.
  • Conduct field observations, ride checks, passenger surveys, and data collection activities to support planning and operational initiatives.
  • Investigate and respond to customer complaints related to bus stops and passenger facilities as directed.
  • Assist with community outreach events, surveys, and public engagement activities as needed.
  • Maintain clean and debris-free conditions at bus stops and passenger facility areas as assigned.
  • Regularly attend and participate in internal team meetings, trainings, and mandatory Company staff meetings.
  • Cooperatively and efficiently perform other assigned duties and tasks.
