About The Position

Pascal develops solid refrigerant technologies for cooling a warming world. We have translated our core technology into a commercial-scale refrigerator. As we scale our systems, we believe new materials can unlock engineering paths that were previously inaccessible. Pascal is seeking a materials scientist to advance our materials development pipeline. Working directly with Pascal’s CTO and senior materials scientist, you will develop new programs for materials discovery, expand Pascal’s proprietary materials library, and help build prototypes that connect material properties to system performance. You’ll pursue high-risk, high-reward ideas at the intersection of materials science and thermal engineering, exploring how to turn new materials into engineering realities. This role is a grant-funded fellowship with a fixed two-year term. The fellow will have meaningful input into the research agenda and access to a rapid feedback loop between materials research, prototype testing, and system development. Pascal supports the publication and conference presentation of appropriate fellowship research.

Requirements

  • Experience in developing materials for energy applications.
  • Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field, completed or expected within three months.
  • Proven track record of experimentation and research independence in materials science and chemistry.
  • Exceptional communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work on-site in Watertown, MA.

Nice To Haves

  • Specific experience with synthetic chemistry, materials synthesis, phase-change materials, porous materials, composite engineering, or battery manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Develop novel liquids and solids with unconventional properties.
  • Characterize materials using a range of experimental techniques, including differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, sorption analysis, mechanical testing, imaging, and X-ray diffraction.
  • Invent new techniques and formulations for producing solid refrigerant composites at scale.
  • Use Pascal’s custom-built test rigs to evaluate the transport properties of solid refrigerant composites.
  • Collaborate with Pascal’s engineers to design test rigs and develop test procedures.
  • Contribute to building and nurturing the company’s culture and values.
  • Mentor interns and co-op students on R&D projects.
