About The Position

The nurse will provide nursing services congruent with the CSHS grant, when the school nurse needs support or coverage. Each school works independently with the vendor nurse to secure field trip coverage at $65 per hour for field trips and pays the nurse from their field trip budgets, and not this grant. Because healthy children are successful learners, school-based nurses advocate for students' physical, emotional, mental, and social health. Using their clinical knowledge and judgment, school-based nurses routinely perform the following duties. The Nurse Works under the general supervision of the Superintendent/Receiver, Chief of Pupil Services, Director of Health, Wellness, and Nursing, and the building school nurse. Works collaboratively and cooperatively with the School Building Principal. Works with a supportive team (orientation and training provided). Supports CSHS grant initiatives. Collaborates with implementing state-mandated screening programs. Provides case management and care coordination support. Provides support and health education to students and families. Supports students returning to school after extended absences. Maintains up-to-date school records. Supports or covers the health office when the school nurse is out of office, engaged in activities such as, but not limited to, care meetings, screenings, health teaching, PD, and other grant-related activities. Provides medically prescribed interventions, including medication administration, and care for ill or injured children. Provides emergency health care and referral to staff. Follows the medication administration plan in the school. Acts as a resource in health education to school personnel, students, and families. Uses community resources for referral of students with unmet health needs, including the need for a primary care provider. Serves as liaison between school personnel, family, and community healthcare providers to ensure a healthy school environment. May accompany field trips for students with specific health-related needs (as per other agreement with building principal/designee and not allowed through this grant). Performs related duties as needed.

Requirements

Registered Nurse (RN) required
Current CPR certification
Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent teamwork skills
Bilingual English-Spanish preferred
Driver’s license and own transportation required
Required license(s): Valid license to practice as an RN in Massachusetts
Current CPR/AED

Experience as a nurse in child health, community health, or other relevant clinical nursing settings preferred
