About The Position

The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) is seeking passionate and dedicated Part-Time Lecturers in Chemistry to join our vibrant academic community. This is an exciting opportunity to deliver rigorous, engaging instruction across our core General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry sequences in both lecture and hands-on laboratory settings. This role is integral to our commitment to providing high-quality, accessible education that supports a diverse student body - from traditional learners to non-traditional professionals - pursuing degrees in science, health professions, and education. At UMF, you will contribute to a dynamic learning environment that utilizes various instructional modalities, including but not limited to face-to-face, synchronous, and asynchronous formats, allowing you to connect with and mentor a broad range of aspiring scientists.

Requirements

  • Education: Master's degree in Chemistry or a closely related sub-discipline (e.g. Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry)

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced Degree: A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related sub-discipline (e.g. Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry)
  • Teaching Experience: Previous teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
  • Expertise: Demonstrated expertise in organic synthesis and modern analytical instrumentation.
  • Skills: Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with a proven ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to a diverse undergraduate population.

Responsibilities

  • Inspire Learning: Design and deliver compelling lectures, lead lesson planning, and facilitate assignment design to cultivate critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills in aspiring scientists.
  • Mentor in the Lab: Guide students through engaging, hands-on laboratory sessions, fostering their mastery of technical skills while rigorously upholding the highest safety protocols (Chemical Hygiene Plans).
  • Drive Student Success: Create and employ diverse assessments methods (exams, quizzes, and rubrics) and provide timely, constructive feedback and grading to support academic growth.
  • Professional Engagement: Maintain supportive correspondence with students, attend course coordination meetings, and complete all required orientations and trainings (e.g. compliance training).
  • Administration: Leverage the University's Learning Management System (LMS) to efficiently distribute materials and manage course records.
