About The Position

The Wheaton Academy Guidance Counselor is trained in school counseling and will provide support for the various teams within student services, including academic support, social-emotional support, and registrar work. The Guidance Counselor works on campus five days per week, for 25 hours per week, during the months of August through June (11 months / year).

  • The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in school counseling and/or Type 73 school guidance certificate; one year to three years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve on the academic intervention team and provide general counseling related to academic placement and intervention needs.
  • Provide general counseling regarding social/ emotional concerns, doing so in alignment with Wheaton Academy's mission and Statement of faith.
  • Be accessible and willing to initiate communication with students, parents, and appropriate school personnel in a Christ-like manner.
  • Provide crisis intervention for students when possible.
  • Serve as a Christian role model for students and parents.
  • Make referrals to appropriate outside agencies and provide referrals for long-term counseling as needed.
  • Assist with creating Individual Service Plans (504 equivalent) and meeting with students / families that have ISPs.
  • Assist with securing accommodations for students with ISPs for all school ACT / SAT / PSAT testing.
  • Manage a caseload of students with academic and/or social emotional needs.
  • Assist with registration, schedule changes, collection of school forms.
  • Lead therapeutic group(s).
  • Development of curriculum and support structures (groups etc.) for student emotional health issues (eating disorders, loss of a parent, etc.)
