About The Position

Portland Community College (PCC) is seeking applications for a Part-Time Faculty Interest Pool for ASL/English Interpreting. This pool is used to identify applicants as the need arises for new part-time faculty. Applications may be considered for substitute or full-term class assignments. PCC serves approximately 80,000 students across four campuses, five workforce training centers, and 200 community locations, aiming to make high-quality education accessible and contribute to economic development.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Interpreting, Interpreter Education, Intercultural Relations, Deaf Education, Linguistics, or related field.
  • Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (acceptable certifications: CSC, CI/CT or NIC) OR certification from the ASLTA.
  • Current membership in the Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT).
  • Three (3) years of experience teaching interpreting or American Sign Language in credit courses at the college level.
  • Native or near-native ASL proficiency (to be assessed through a proficiency interview).
  • Reside in Oregon or Washington.
  • Ability to establish residence in Oregon or Washington.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience coordinating an academic program, including working with part-time faculty and developing curriculum.
  • AAS or BA in Sign Language Interpretation, Interpreter Education, Intercultural Relations, Deaf Education, Linguistics or related field (for specific specialized teaching assignments).
  • Three years professional interpreting experience (for specific specialized teaching assignments).
  • Background in mentoring new interpreters (for practicum courses).
  • Three (3) years of experience teaching for-credit ASL classes OR recent experience directly related to the content of the course to be taught (for other courses).
  • Three (3) years of professional work experience in the Deaf community (for Human Relations related instruction).
  • Three (3) years of professional work experience mentoring and providing feedback to ASL students, and/or interpreters (for Communication related instruction).
  • Three (3) years of professional work experience in basic business aspects and accounting (for Computation related instruction).

Responsibilities

  • Teach ASL/English Interpreting courses.
  • Potentially teach practicum courses (e.g., ITP 180, 279, 281, 283, 284, 285).
  • Potentially teach language, theory, and interpreting courses.
  • Potentially teach courses with embedded related instruction in areas such as Human Relations, Communication, or Computation.
  • List current PCC courses that you would be able to teach.
  • Contribute to the learning community at PCC.
