About The Position

The Michigan Department of Corrections is seeking a Parole Probation Officer for the Kent County Probation Office. This position offers the ability to be a hybrid role for up to 50% of the pay period, with initial in-office training. The officer will be responsible for a variety of job functions related to offenders, including coaching to help those under supervision address their needs and learn new skills that lead to a more prosocial lifestyle and ultimately protection of the public. Responsibilities include preparing background reports on offenders convicted in Circuit Court for sentencing determination and supervising offenders placed on community supervision through court-ordered probation or parole. The caseload may include specialized populations such as sex offenders, those on electronic monitoring (GPS), gender-specific, mentally ill, or Interstate Compact cases. The employee may also be assigned as an embedded agent with local law enforcement, an Institutional Parole Agent, or an Internet Crimes Against Children Agent. The role requires adherence to department policies, procedures, and guiding principles. This is a DART (Drug/Alcohol Test Designated) position requiring regular unsupervised access to and direct contact with probationers or parolees. Considerable independent judgment is necessary for assignments with significant impact on services or programs.

Requirements

Possession of a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, correctional administration, criminology, psychology, social work, counseling and guidance, child development, sociology, school social work, social work administration, education psychology, family relations, human services, or theology.
Two years of professional experience working with adult offenders equivalent to a Parole/Probation Officer, including one year equivalent to a Parole/Probation Officer 10.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possession of a valid driver’s license.
Availability of an automobile for business use.
Completion of Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) (40 or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on offender contact level and job classification).
Completion of additional online training.
Report any possible conflict of interest.
Satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation, if convicted of a misdemeanor or felony.

Responsibilities
