NOTE: Senate Bill 411 merged the Department of Corrections and the Board of Probation and Parole. This position is within the Department of Corrections. DESCRIPTION OF WORK This position focuses on preparing inmates at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Greene for parole interviews and helping them understand the requirements for release. It plays a key role in gathering information, guiding inmates, and supporting the parole decision process.
Requirements
- Four years of paraprofessional experience which includes two years of paraprofessional social services, human services, corrections, or law enforcement experience; or Two years of paraprofessional social services, human services, corrections, or law enforcement experience, and an associate’s degree; or A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, legal studies, political science, behavioral science, or a related field; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
- Possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C driver’s license or equivalent.
- Must obtain CLEAN certification within two months of employment and maintain this certification for the duration of employment in this job.
- Successful completion of the Parole Agent 1 basic training program at the Training Academy in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
- Must meet the PA residency requirement.
- Must be able to perform essential job functions.
- A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination and drug screening.
- Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
- A conditional offer of employment requires review of prior law enforcement employment records as required by Pennsylvania Act 57 of 2020.
Responsibilities
- Meet with inmates to guide them through the parole interview process and help them develop a clear and acceptable parole plan
- Collect important case details, review background information, and prepare investigations requests
- Write reports, summaries, and related documents that assist decision makers in evaluating each inmate’s parole suitability
- Lead classes and orientation sessions that teach inmates about parole expectations, procedures, and conditions
- Coordinate and assist with parole hearings by preparing materials, escorting non-institution participants, and providing testimony when needed
- Respond to inmate inquiries and communicate with staff, officials, and families to provide accurate information on policies and case matters
