About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Public Works Maintenance Supervisor, or designee. Performs unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor related to functions in the Parks Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. Assignments include maintaining City parks, grounds, buildings, and recreational areas in accordance with City ordinances and Departmental policies. Requires the ability to be contacted by telephone for call-out after hours. Work is reviewed through observations and obtained results.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the tools used in Public Works maintenance and construction.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and practices used in Public Works construction and maintenance environment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards connected with maintenance and/or Public Works construction and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the materials, methods and practices used in construction and grounds maintenance work.
  • Ability to learn methods of maintaining buildings and grounds.
  • Ability to physically perform light to heavy manual labor in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand, communicate, and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn safe operation of hand and power tools and light to heavy equipment specific to tasks assigned.
  • Graduation from high school; or GED.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Reaching, bending, and lifting heavy loads.
  • Use of fingers, use of hands.
  • Standing, walking, climbing.

Nice To Haves

  • Florida Stormwater Association (FSA) Level 1 Certification
  • Pinellas County Landscape BMP Certification
  • Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic Certification
  • Florida Stormwater Erosion, and Sedimentation Control Certification, or the ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months from date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Operates tractor mower, power mowers, edgers and clippers, and other equipment and tools used in landscaping and grounds maintenance.
  • Mowing, edging, trimming, raking, weeding plant beds, pruning shrubs and small trees, planting, and watering, cleaning and clearing vegetation.
  • Sets up and picks up barricades, cones, and warning signs.
  • Prepares site and equipment setups for special City events.
  • Prepares clay infields, spiking and digging of ball fields.
  • Performs fence, carpentry, and irrigation and playground repairs.
  • Empties garbage cans and picks up trash and debris from City grounds.
  • Evening and/or weekend work will be required, including disaster response and recovery.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
