About The Position

Pima County’s Conservation Lands & Resources Department is seeking a highly motivated and hard-working individual to fill a position as Park Technician I. This position is part of the Parks and Trails Division of Conservation Lands & Resources, supporting Pima County’s conservation efforts. It will involve assisting with maintenance, construction, campground operations, and restoration projects at Tucson Mountain Park and its trails. This role is field-oriented, often in remote areas, with exposure to extreme temperatures in both summer and winter and requires the candidate to be in excellent physical condition. This is primarily a manual labor position requiring the ability to lift heavy loads; safely operate assigned vehicles and other powered equipment; work in extremes of heat, humidity, dust, and cold; safely wear required safety clothing and equipment; and ascend and descend ladders and stairs to reach and work upon elevated or below-grade work platforms and job sites. On assigned projects, the extended use of hand tools such as shovels, pickaxes, digging bars, and rakes is required. Invasive species work requires the candidate to mechanically remove or apply chemicals to combat invasive species and work where venomous animals may be encountered.

Requirements

  • Six months of experience performing duties in landscape, grounds maintenance, arborist, equipment operator, general handyman or similar duties in a specific skill, craft, vocation, trade or operational area of employment.
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • Pre-employment background checks.
  • Post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
  • Post-job offer physical and/or drug screen.
  • Post-job offer proof of immunization(s) or immunization(s) and/or a TB screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum one (1) year experience performing duties in landscape, grounds maintenance, arborist, equipment operator, general handyman or similar duties in a specific skill, craft, vocation, trade or operational area of employment.
  • Minimum six (6) months experience in a customer service setting responding to customer inquiries.
  • Minimum six (6) months experience with the loading, securing, transport, and field use of equipment, UTVs/ATVs, and a variety of trailers.
  • Minimum six (6) months experience working near roadways.

Responsibilities

  • Cuts, trims, edges, seeds, fertilizes, stripes ball field and leisure turf
  • Structurally prunes, shapes and maintains urban forest and ground vegetation
  • Performs minor repairs and adjustments to plumbing and irrigation systems
  • Operates ride-on equipment and utilizes powered maintenance and construction equipment/tools
  • Performs operator-level inspections, servicing, maintenance and security of assigned tools, equipment and vehicles
  • Applies paints, varnish, stains, and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures
  • Stores, handles, applies and disposes of hazardous materials required to complete work or generated by work assignments
  • Collection and disposal of trash
  • Maintains and uses safety and personal protective equipment
  • Explains rules, regulations or procedures to the public and/or vendors
  • Maintenance may include wildlife drinkers, ponds, equestrian, camp facilities, trails, habitat restoration, erosion control and invasive species.
