About The Position

This is the first of three levels in the Parks and Recreation series. Incumbents plan, coordinate and monitor recreational and youth sports activities and programs. Responsibilities may include hiring seasonal and part-time staff; determining program offerings; developing and implementing operating manuals; promoting service offerings to the community; providing information for the development of a budget; monitoring a budget; maintaining records; and preparing operational reports. Incumbents supervise lower-level Parks and Recreation staff.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Sports Management, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience in recreational programming or sports management, including one (1) year in a supervisory position
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job's essential duties.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of Supervisory principles.
  • Knowledge of Recreational program planning principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of Marketing principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of Budgeting principles.
  • Knowledge of Recordkeeping practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of Customer service principles.
  • Knowledge of Computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in Monitoring and evaluating employees.
  • Skill in Prioritizing and assigning work.
  • Skill in Planning, developing, supervising, and managing programs and/or events.
  • Skill in Providing customer service.
  • Skill in Monitoring budgets.
  • Skill in Developing promotional materials.
  • Skill in Preparing and maintaining records and reports.
  • Skill in Using a computer and related software applications.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisors, the public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises staff to include prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Assists in the creation and promotion of department strategic planning and goals.
  • Plans, develops, and markets new and existing recreation programs and/or special events; evaluates programs and events for future improvements and/or modifications.
  • Promotes programs, events, and offerings to the public.
  • Develops, implements, and administers operating manuals; monitors operational compliance.
  • Assists with budget preparation and administration, which may include preparing cost estimates for budget recommendations, submitting justifications for budget items, monitoring, and controlling program expenditures.
  • Collaborates with community groups, schools and local organizations for the partnering in and promotion of recreational activities and events.
  • Prepares a variety of operational records and reports.
  • Performs other related work as required.
