About The Position

Performs duties requiring expert ability in performing difficult repair, alteration, and modernization painting projects. Matches paint and stain colors to color books, restores woodwork, applies various specialized coatings, applies oil and latex caulk in interior and exterior situations, operates power washing equipment, performs minor and major drywall and plaster repairs, uses spray equipment, sprays latex and alkyd materials and schedules work with clients. Is responsible for determining the skills required and estimating the employees hours, materials, tools, and equipment necessary to accomplish the work. Recognizes and evaluates difficult and/or complex problems that arise during the course of a project and takes appropriate remedial actions. Is expected to recognize occupational hazards associated with painting projects and to exercise appropriate safety measures. Assists supervisors in making facility inspections to determine painting necessary to buildings and equipment. Advises and recommends to higher level maintenance employees procedures required to correct difficult painting situations. Utilizes current countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

Requirements

  • Be a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Educational Development Test.
  • Have had at least four (4) years of full‑time work experience involving the use of painting skills.
  • Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license.
  • Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this classification.
  • Successfully complete the six month probationary period.
  • Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Considerable painting knowledge, such as the relative strengths and weaknesses of latex and oil based paints and the use and cleaning of a wide range of brushes and rollers.
  • Considerable knowledge in estimating labor and materials costs, preparations required, depending on surface to be painted, and effects of weather on drying time.
  • Considerable knowledge of patch plastering, wall repair, and causes of plaster deterioration.
  • Considerable ability to estimate the hours, techniques, tools, materials, and equipment required to complete a painting project.
  • Considerable ability to work under pressure during an emergency.
  • Reasonable ability to train, direct, and evaluate the performance of work crews.
  • Reasonable ability to inspect and report on the progress of work projects.
  • Reasonable ability to work under hazardous and/or difficult working conditions common to the painting craft or field, such as high or confined places, high voltage areas, and/or areas involving heat, offensive odors, and dampness.
  • Reasonable knowledge of and ability to practice standard safety techniques.
  • Reasonable knowledge of the practical application of first aid techniques.
  • Familiar with current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and Internet software.

Responsibilities

  • Matches paint and stain colors from existing surfaces to color books (fan decks).
  • Restores woodwork, including doors, trim cabinets, and furniture by using stripper, stain, sealer, colored putty, and appropriate finish.
  • Applies various specialized coatings, such as Elastomeric, Latex or Alkyd Epoxies, Direct-to-Metal products, interior and exterior latex or oil-based stains, and colored stain-varnish products (such as Poly-Shades, etc).
  • Skillfully applies accent colors in rooms for decorative enhancement.
  • Applies silicone and latex caulk, white and colored, in interior and exterior situations.
  • Uses power washing equipment for cleaning and/or for preparing to paint or stain.
  • Uses spray equipment to spray latex or alkyd material in interior and exterior situations, including structural steel ceilings, walls, block, etc.
  • Performs minor and major drywall and plaster repairs, including replacing drywall, taping, bedding, and finishing.
  • Schedules convenient days and times with clients in order for work to be done efficiently.
  • Reviews job orders and specifications to estimate the employee hours, materials, tools, and equipment necessary to complete painting projects.
  • Plans, assigns, directs, coordinates, and reviews the work of one or more maintenance employees engaged in painting projects.
  • Orders, stores, and controls the materials, tools, and equipment necessary to accomplish assigned painting projects.
  • Advises and recommends to higher level maintenance personnel procedures required to correct difficult and/or emergency painting situations.
  • Uses safety equipment, such as glasses, gloves, masks, respirators, etc., as needed.
  • Also uses scaffolds, power mechanical lifts, ladders, and extension poles safely.
  • Utilizes current countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
  • Assists supervisor in the inspection of facilities to determine repairs necessary to buildings and equipment.
  • Maintains records relative to materials and employee hours utilized on specific projects.
  • Reviews work under construction and upon completion to determine the effectiveness of work methods.
