About The Position

Performs a variety of semi-skilled and technical tasks in the maintenance and operation of buildings, grounds, open spaces, aquatics facilities, parks and recreation systems. This role involves assisting in the training and/or supervision of lower-level employees or community service workers, and maintaining and installing/repairing park lights, ball field lights, light control systems, and light scheduling. The position also includes semi-skilled interior/exterior building maintenance (painting, plumbing, carpentry), routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment, and carrying out turf care tasks such as seeding, fertilizing, and pest control. Responsibilities extend to maintaining and adjusting specialized turf care equipment, operating various machinery, and ensuring safe and proper maintenance techniques. The role also involves waste disposal, litter collection, facility opening/closing, assisting with program setups, maintaining sprinkler systems, and aiding in the construction and repair of park facilities. Record keeping and other related tasks as assigned are also part of the duties. Peripheral duties include serving on employee committees, driving a recreation van, and acting as a member of the City of Deer Park’s Emergency Management team.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
  • Four years’ experience in repair and maintenance work, or Any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • NIMS Certifications will be required for position.
  • Valid state driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
  • Working knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance
  • Working knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs
  • Working knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
  • Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely
  • Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
  • Knowledge of report and record maintenance principles and procedures.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make independent decisions in accordance with established City policies and procedures.
  • May be required to obtain certifications or training in specialized areas as needed and assigned by the Park Operations Supervisor.

Nice To Haves

  • Herbicide applicator’s license.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Endorsement or the ability to obtain all within 90 days of hire.
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) or ability to obtain withing 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the training and/or supervision of lower-level employees or community service workers.
  • Maintains and assists with the installation and repair of park lights, ball field lights, light control systems, and light scheduling.
  • Performs semi-skilled interior/exterior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work.
  • Performs routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment.
  • Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of parks and open spaces when instructed.
  • Maintains and adjusts specialized turf care equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems.
  • Operates tractors, mowers, jack hammers, welders, trucks, steam cleaners, buffers, power washers, chainsaws and other listed equipment as needed.
  • Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds maintenance functions.
  • Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises.
  • Opens and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed.
  • Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs, prepares facilities for park and recreation program use.
  • Maintains sprinkler systems and assists in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.
  • Assists in the construction of new parks facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.
  • Assists in the construction and repair of existing parks facilities and designs and builds Parks and Recreation related structures as needed.
  • Keeps records of work completed.
  • Assist with any additional job-related tasks as instructed by the Park Operations Supervisor, Assistant Park Operations Supervisor or Crew Leader.
  • Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.
  • Drives recreation van on field trips as assigned.
  • Serves as a member of the City of Deer Park’s Emergency Management team.
