About The Position

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of City buildings and equipment, park, open space, cemetery, pool and recreation facilities, rights-of-way, and related facilities as required. A Parks Landscape & Building Maintenance Worker I may be assigned to any maintenance division in the Parks & Community Services Department. This classification is the entry-level position within the Parks Landscape & Building Maintenance series. Employees typically require direct supervision and perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks, performing the more routine duties and assisting higher-level staff with more complex tasks. Employees are not expected to perform with the same independence and judgment as the Parks Landscape & Building Maintenance Worker class.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid and required appropriate California Driver's License (Class C) issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors and in all weather conditions and with exposure to traffic and potentially hazardous substances; may be required to work outside of normal business hours.
  • Must be able to perform heavy manual labor associated with assigned maintenance tasks which may include lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Those assigned to Parks Landscape Maintenance must obtain their Qualified Applicator Certification (QAC) within 12 months of appointment to this class, plus any State-mandated certification for this position.
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
  • A minimum of one year of work experience in building maintenance, landscape, horticulture, construction, electrical and/or mechanical disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the maintenance, construction, and repair of City cemetery, park and recreation structures, facilities, and equipment.
  • Performs unskilled and semiskilled landscape maintenance and construction work.
  • Maintains, mows, cuts, trims, installs, and waters lawns, shrubs, flowers and ground cover.
  • Opens and closes gravesites.
  • Cultivates and fertilizes lawns.
  • Participates in the applications of agricultural chemicals for control and eradication of plant, tree, and lawn pests, weeds and diseases.
  • Rakes leaves and trash from park areas.
  • Cleans gutters and park pathways.
  • Cleans and disinfects rest rooms, to include floors, windows and fixtures.
  • Assists in installing and repairing sprinkler systems and domestic water lines in all park and recreation areas.
  • Prepares park buildings and structures for painting by cleaning surfaces, patches, fills, tapes, textures and sands, paints building and structure interiors and exteriors, applies paint, varnishes and lacquers by using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment; mixes paint; does sign lettering on wood; maintains painting equipment and tools; provides information on the time and materials it took to complete the job.
  • Replaces and repairs, inspects, installs, alters and maintains plumbing systems and fixtures, including minor repairs to water, sewer and gas lines, valves, drains, sinks, toilets, faucets, pipes, drains and other plumbing installations; clear clogged sewer and water lines; maintains plumbing equipment and tools.
  • Operates trucks, light mowing equipment and light mechanical equipment such as mowers brush chipper, light tractors, roto-tiller, hand and power tools, skip loader, light dump truck and other equipment below Class B requirements.
  • Plants, removes, maintains, prunes, and protects city street and park trees to provide safe and healthy park, street and sidewalk clearance by identifying street safety hazards caused by trees and shrubs; inspects sidewalks damaged by city trees and notifies the proper supervisor; maintains tools and equipment used in park maintenance and gardening.
  • Performs minor mechanical repair work and assists in the repair of more complicated mechanical work, sharpens blades, attaches implements to heavy machinery, changes spark plugs, tires, air filters and similar equipment.
  • Makes minor repairs to wood structures or plumbing fixtures, and assists in assembling and constructing more complicated park and building structures.
  • Performs other park maintenance duties as assigned.
